The Myhre Brothers
We are totally pumped to present this exclusive, just-for-the-festival performance by three generations of our own music royalty. The Myhre Brothers is none other than Alfie (father), Byron (son) and Tanner (grandson)-- three of the finest musicians we have in the Edmonton area. It will be one for the ages and we are honoured to have them at the inaugural RiverCity Bluegrass Festival.
Founding Edmonton’s Myhre’s Music in 1967, Alfie was already well-known for his dramatic fiddle playing, having appeared with some of the best-known musicians in Canada including Gaby Haas and Wilf Carter. Loved and respected worldwide, the Grand Masters honoured him with a lifetime achievement award during the 2013 CGM fiddle competition in Saskatoon. He was inducted into the Country Music Alberta Hall of Fame in 2020 and is a two-time Grand North American Old-Time fiddling champion. Now in his late 80’s, Alfie Myhre is a true Canadian Music Legend; he still loves to practice everyday and is always ready to perform.
Byron is as familiar on Alberta’s music scene. An incredible fiddler in his own right, Byron is also a tasteful guitar player and multi-instrumentalist. Byron was a member of Alberta’s legendary bluegrass band Jerusalem Ridge and has most recently been a member of the popular River City Playboys. He has toured with John Reischman & the Jaybirds and played across the province with other artists including Ben Sures and Will White. Byron continues the tradition in owning Myhre’s Music and performing for customers with his special brand of comedy and whatever instrument he is trying to sell.
Many of you know Tanner as the one who greets everyone with a big smile at the shop, but what you may not know is that Tanner is an accomplished guitar picker in his own right. He has been known to shred some leads on the electric in the style of Eric Johnson but can also shift to the acoustic and flat-pick lead licks in the style of Tony Rice and Jake Workman. Tanner is emerging as a solid anchor to the fiddle madness of his elders. Keep it up Tanner!
