How Jam Circles Work

The NBCMS jams are completely acoustic, as we keep to the spirit of traditional bluegrass music.
The focus of the NBCMS jam is bluegrass. We ask that only acoustic stringed instruments are played, again in the spirit of traditional bluegrass music.
Bluegrass instruments are acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, resonator guitar, and bass.

How to join the circle

The musicians sit in a circle in the centre of the hall. Before you take your seat inside the circle, please make sure your instrument is in tune. If you don’t have an electronic tuner, just ask and someone will be glad to lend you one. You can also check the front table as we sometimes have one available there.

If you’re new to jamming, you might choose a seat next to a more experienced player playing the same instrument. If you wish to just play quietly in the background, that’s just fine. There is an etiquette that jams follow, so watch what other experienced players are doing and follow along. We’ve provided a list of suggestions to help you understand jam etiquette. As each jam is different, the rules can change slightly, so just watch and eventually you’ll get the hang of things.

Playing music together is fun.
If we follow these simple rules, we’ll all have a great time!
